An Evening of Classical South Indian Music

Featuring S. Prasanna Venkatesh (vocal), Tanjore S. Ramakrishnan (violin), and Melakkaveri K. Balaji (mridangam).

S. Prasanna Venkatesh (vocal)
  • Srirangam S. Prasanna Venkatesh, Carnatic Vocalist and disciple of Madurai Sri T. N. Sesha Gopalan, has been learning music for more than 20 years and is a B-High graded Carnatic Vocalist in the All India Radio, Prasar Bharati (Broadcasting Corporation of India). Prasanna has received several awards including “Sangeetha Sree” (Sri Rasika Ranjani Sabha, Tiruchirapalli, 1994) and has been recognized for “Pallavi Singing” by Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, Chennai. Prasanna has performed in several prestigious forums in India and the United States. His areas of interests include singing Ragam Tanam Pallavi, tuning Divya Prabandham poetry, and composing Keerthanams and Varnams.
TANJORE S. RAMAKRISHNAN (Violin)
  • Sri Ramakrishnan, an accomplished violinist and Carnatic music vocalist, has been giving violin performances from the age of nine. Ramakrishnan is an “A” Grade artist of All India Radio and has given several performances in All India Radio and Doordarshan – National Television, India. Ramakrishnan’s violin is known for its melody, rich tonal quality, and strong layam. He has won several awards from prominent organizations in India, including the famed “Best –Violinist/ Naum Lichenberg award” from the Music Academy, Chennai. His latest CD is entitled “VIOLIN BREEZE.” Sri Ramakrishnan has given numerous solo performances in India, United Kingdom, and the United States. He has also accompanied many leading artists and has given many violin duet concerts along with Smt T. Rukmini at leading organizations. He has also performed with leading Jazz artists in the United Sates.
MELAKKAVERI K. BALAJI (Percussion: Mridangam)
  • Melakkaveri K. Balaji hails from a family of musicians and has been trained by his father, the renowned Mridanga Vidwan, Melakkaveri K. Krishnamurthy. Sri Balaji is a professional Mridangam player and has accompanied many notable artists including Padmabushan Dr. M. Balamurali Krishna, Sri T. V. Sankaranarayanan, Lalgudi Sri G. Jayaraman, Lalgudi G. J. R. Krishnan, Sri T. N. Krishnan, Sri M. S. Gopalakrishnan, Sri M. Chandrasekaran, and Dr. N. Ramani. He has traveled extensively all over the world, giving concerts and working on teaching assignments.
  • He has received numerous honors and awards, including “Best Mridangam Player” (Music Academy, Madras, Annual Music Competition in l987), “Best Junior Mridangam Player Special Prize “(Music Academy, Madras, 1993), and “Yuva Kala Bharati” (Bharat Kalachar, Chennai, 1995). Sri Balaji is an “A” Grade Artist in Mridangam for All India Radio, Chennai.
