Two lectures on Gujarati Culture!

Venu Mehta, “Kanyā-Keṇavaḷī and Folk-literature: Methods for Girl-child Education in Nineteenth Century Folk-Societies of Gujarat”

In this lecture, Venu Mehta will present an account of what alternative methods of education were developed by the folk-societies of Gujarat region where formal schooling for girls was not very common in the nineteenth century. The lecture focuses specifically on rural-based folk-societies of Gujarat. Venu Mehta will discuss the diverse forms of folk-literature in Gujarati language aimed to inculcate cultural values, aesthetic sense, art and craft, everyday mathematics, life-skills, environmental education and so on in the girls and young women.

Bhakti Mamtora, “Theorizing Scripture: Tellings and Texts in 19th-century Gujarat.” 

This presentation examines the terms scripture and shastra within the study of Hindu religious traditions, and uses the Swamini Vato, a 19th-century Gujarati text as a case study to understand the ways in which oral teachings are revered as scripture within the Swaminarayan Sampraday.
